![]() ![]() I figured, if dolls had feelings, she'd probably wish for a girl of 8 or 10, not a girl nearly 16. I also took a shine to her because she'd spent so long in a box with no one to love her. I love the way her dark skin looks in fashions. I was walking in a devastated and remorseful haze thinking, "Why didn't you buy that awesome doll you cheap fool?" -and I nearly walked into the shelf she was still sitting on! I had spoken with the wrong seller, the doll was still there! With trembling fingers, I pulled out the money and made the best purchase of my life. I asked the woman I thought had had her what happened to the doll and she said she thought she sold her. For a week or so, she weighed on my mind. ![]() At 15, twenty dollars seems like a fortune and I was cheap. The problem: the twenty dollar price tag. I was at an indoor flea market and we saw a boxed 1991 Pet Pals Skipper. As much as I loved the Rio doll, she just lacked Daphne's nostalgic charm. Although my sister favors early 80s and 2000s Barbie dolls, I gravitate toward late 80s and early 90s Barbie dolls. I bought a Rio de Janeiro Skipper at the store and made her Daphne's best friend. What became of Daphne in our doll games? I'm ashamed to say she took a backseat. One year, Dad bought us a bunch of 80s/90s Barbies on eBay for Christmas and one was a brand new (well, unopened) Courtney! I really love her because she's a treasured gift and it's cool to think that, nearly ten years after first holding Daphne and wondering who she was, I got to open one! If I don't buy it, I think, "If only I'd bought that 5th Courtney four years ago." Apart from good old Daffy, I have another Teen Time Courtney that is very sentimental. She's one of the dolls that I want to re-buy every time I see one. ![]() I have several other Teen Time Courtney dolls. One of Kocoum's daughters, Daphne was convinced she'd be a legendary star one day and was, to be honest, full of herself. What did I name Courtney? "Dystan." I'm pretty sure I was going for "Icing." Frostin' and Icing are great names for your dolls/kids-if you're a sugar-aholic!Īnyway, what made me a Skipper fanatic was the day in my teens when I gave "Dystan" the new persona of Daphne. When we were really young and played more by ourselves than together, she was Hawaiian Fun Barbie's sister. We took turns playing with her over the years. We both found her odd size and dread locked hair fascinating. The other Skipper-sized doll we got that night was Teen Time Courtney. This doll was tossed out by Mom early on. We weren't sure if the Cheerleader was a girl or a boy-a very flat chest, but different from Ken's, and short hair. ![]() I would have taken her too, you know, being so very generous and all, but my Memeré made me save one of the pretty girls for Shelly. I took all the pretty girl dolls, with the exception of Christina (Ice Capades), for myself. Being the eldest sister, I was allowed to take my pick first and, needless to say, I left the doll with butchered hair for my little sister. One of them vanished a long time ago-we both recall a Teen Fun Cheerleader Teen doll with butchered hair. In our first lot of second hand Barbies from our grandparents, I believe there were two Skipper sized dolls. ![]()
